CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Hey! Superstar, you joining us for drinks?” Claudia, her desk-mate, popped up beside Taryn, suddenly transformed from mild-mannered reporter to hot, single woman on the prowl.

“Look at you, all Kara Danvers to Supergirl,” Taryn teased. Claudia had been on her to join them for drinks all day but Taryn had to finish this story.

“Funny. You’re so funny, Taryn. Come on, join us!” Claudia pleaded, her eyes dancing with excitement. The group near the elevators called out impatiently, but Claudia held up a finger to them and kept her eyes on Taryn. “Part of being good at your job is networking with your colleagues. Some of the other papers and magazines will be represented there tonight. You can’t spend the rest of your career landing exclusive interviews with Paxton Stevens to stay in Cassidy’s good graces. Come on, Taryn, come out with us.”

Taryn got the feeling Claudia genuinely wanted her to go along. For a moment, she wondered what it would be like to just be normal and go for drinks but then reality crept back in and Taryn waved off the invite. “I’m sorry, I’m just not feeling so great. I was going to just finish this story and get home to my bed.” She really didn’t feel well, her stomach had been uneasy since lunch. “I think it was the duck at lunch,” Taryn added for good measure, trying to sell enough misery to be convincing.

“I told you to skip the duck, silly!” Claudia chastised lightly. “Take care of yourself and plan on going with us tomorrow night, okay? We’ll be hitting a new club. Max managed to book a private room just for us!”

“Sounds good,” Taryn agreed, wishing Claudia would just beg off already.

The ding of the elevator sent Claudia running to catch up with her group. Taryn watched them disappear as the doors closed. Finally, alone in the newsroom, Taryn pecked out the finishing touches of her follow-up on Paxton’s return including the postponement of his first game back with the Grizzlies. Taryn hadn’t spoken to him much over the past few weeks, but she knew him well enough to know the delay was not Paxton’s choice. He liked to confront things head on and he had been on board with Olivia’s plan from day one.

The arrival of Paxton’s parents changed everything. When it was just his mother, it hadn’t been so bad, but then his father showed up in Memphis unannounced. Complicated became an understatement when it came to their lives. Apparently, Paxton’s little freak out at the cabin didn’t have anything to do with not wanting her. It had everything to do with his being the next alpha for his pack, which meant imprinting on a non-shifter was about the worst thing he could do. His parents didn’t take it well. They wanted Taryn as far away from Paxton as possible. Except that Paxton couldn’t go long without her, something about shifter biology and the bond of the imprint. Those visits had been awkward, stilted, formal, and incredibly uncomfortable.
